There is an old saying that "one man’s trash is another man’s treasure." But this particular weekend, we learned that a yard sale can be so much more than an exchange of secondhand goods. It can be a holy ground, a place of divine appointments, and a powerful mission field.
We recently had the incredible opportunity to host a community yard sale. Our primary goal was practical: to raise funds and support the vital mission of Awakening Faith Frontliners. But as we set out the tables and unfolded the clothes, we knew in our hearts that God had an even bigger blueprint for the day.
More Than Buying and Selling
While it was wonderful to see items find new homes and watch the support for our frontliners grow, the real magic happened in the quiet moments between transactions.
We didn’t just want to hand people change; we wanted to hand them hope. Throughout the day, God opened doors for us to do exactly that. We had the profound privilege to:
Listen to the stories of neighbors we might otherwise never have met.
Encourage those who were carrying heavy burdens, reminding them of strength in the Lord.
Pray right there on the driveway with people who just needed to know they weren't alone.
It was a beautiful reminder that you don't need a pulpit or a stage to spread the Word of God. Sometimes, all you need is a open heart and a front yard.
A Divine Appointment
The highlight of the entire day came when a sweet lady wandered up to our tables. She looked around, kind of bewildered, and confessed to us, "I honestly have no idea why I even came to this yard sale today."
We couldn’t help but smile.
She might not have known why she was there, but we know a God who knew exactly why.
He knew she needed a warm smile. He knew she needed a word of encouragement. He knew her steps needed to be directed to a place where she would be covered in prayer and reminded of His relentless love for her. What she thought was a random Saturday detour was actually a divine appointment.
"In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps." — Proverbs 16:9
Moving Forward on the Frontlines
That weekend proved that mission work isn't just about crossing oceans; it’s about crossing the street. It’s about being available to be used by God wherever we are, whether that's in full-time ministry or standing behind a cash box at a garage sale.
